Discovering Repetition In Art

Geoff McFetridge is a Canadian artist, filmmaker, and title designer based in Los Angeles. He attended and graduated from The Alberta College of Art and Cal Arts and worked in the world of graphic design and created graphics and logotypes for companies like ESPN, Burton Snowboards, Nike, Girl Skateboards, Stussy and others.

This shows repetition as the person is being repeated 3 different times just in different sizes. This shows rhythm as there is movement through the people that can be seen from the smallest to largest or largest to smallest.

This shows repetition through the bricks repeating and the lamp posts, the people on bikes, and the houses repeat as well. This shows emphasis in a way as all the white space is being emphasized as the focal point by the brocks and your attention is drawn towards the white space.

Florine Smith

Florine Smith is one of the Gee's Bend quiltmakers. She drew designs on paper and patterns on paper but she moved toward expressive improvisation when she began creating the quilts. Her patterns were determined by the type of fabric she used which was corduroy is prone to raveling and fraying, she made her patterns in large simple rectangular pieces.

This shows repetition as the lines repeat in each diagonal section as well as the repetition of a section. This shows rhythm as your eyes follow the direction that the lines go in and make you change focus to another section of the quilt after a while.

This shows repetition as the are directional arrows that repeat over an over and repeat in two different sections. This shows rhythm as your eyes follow the direction of the arrows and at least when I see it it moves from one section to the other so my eyes follow the arrows up and then down.

Frank Stella

Frank Stella was born in 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts. He Princeton University where he majored in history but visits to art galleries in New York influenced his artistic development. He used a technique called the shaped canvas when drawing art which caused his work to get recognized due to the innovation.

This shows repetition as there are multiple colors and shapes repeated multiple times. This shows unity as the combination of these shapes and colors make up a whole shape and the shape is created by the repetition of the colors and shapes.

This shows repetition as there are multiple different colors in the shape that repeat multiple times. This shows unity as the colors and shapes used create the image and this is done by those colors and shapes being repeated multiple times.
